Our entryway had no coat hooks or a place to sit to put on shoes when we moved in, and this product is made of decent materials with an attractive appearance for the price. It was tough finding something that wouldn't completely block our light switch or keep us from getting to our power outlet (behind the bench), but this did the trick. It was really easy to put together, and we're really happy with it now that we've finished the project of mounting it. However, that was no easy task.Other reviews touch on this, but you will absolutely need to mount this in wall studs if you want it to stay up and hold coats. The shelf is already heavy on its own and the mounting system is somewhat flimsy. Get some extra 3-inch screws for both the mounting bracket and the shelf itself. Make sure you have a long enough drill bit for pilot holes before you start, and get really good quality hardware. We sheared off more than one screw in our wall while putting this up.Also note that the shelf doesn't have a complete back behind the shelves. As in, you can see some wall through the cubbies. I took another reviewer's advice and cut up three pieces of the box this came in to make cubby inserts to cover the back. I covered them in fabric to match the color of the shelf and you can't tell that it's not a part of the unit even when you're standing in front of it. Annoying that you have to do that at all, but not too hard to deal with. The manufacturer should consider adding pieces to the product in the future rather than hiding the back of the cubbies with plants in the product photos. It's heavy! Directions say you need 2 people; need 3.We purchased this after our son got one for his home. Nicely made and great quality.Assembly is much easier than it first looks. Otherwise, the mounting system was fine, and it looks great! Here’s to hoping it hold up a while!!GreatOk, let me start by saying that I read a lot of reviews on this product and I took a lot of other peoples suggestions. The directions say it only takes 30 minutes to put this together. I'm pretty handy, but it took me a little longer than that, maybe 45min. I put the hooks on last, after I had it hanging on the wall. Once you have this put together it is a very heavy piece for one person to lift. I definitely would recommend having two people to lift and position it on the wall. I measured out for my studs on my wall, then I positioned the mounting piece and leveled it. While holding it in place I marked my stud placement on the mounting piece. I removed the mounting piece and predrilled the holes. Then I put the mounting piece back on the wall and leveled again, holding in place I took a small screwdriver(you could use anything that fits in the hole) and went through the holes to make a mark on the wall so I knew where to drill into my stud. I drilled my stud holes then put up the mounting piece. Next, you have to lift the shelf up onto the mounting piece, this is where you will need two people. Here is where I added an extra step, I also wanted to add stud screws into the main shelf (the instructions also have this as an optional step). I'm a worry wort and didn't want the shelf falling down, getting pulled on, lots of coats and backpacks, etc, etc, etc. In the step where I marked my holes in the mounting piece I also marked for holes in the back of the shelf. So, after I had the mounting piece up a lifted the shelf into place (with the extra predrilled holes) I marked for the stud holes also. Then I had to take the shelf back down and drill my stud holes, then (ugh) I put the shelf back up and with the 4 extra stud screws I bought I attached the shelf to the wall. It fits very snug and tight. I added my own baskets and you can't even see the wall behind where the screws are in the wall. I could see this being a concern if you don't plan on putting a basket or something of the sort in there to cover it up. Overall I am very pleased with the shelf, it was a bit tricky to install, but it can be done. *Note, I installed this all myself, but I did get my ladder out to help with hoisting it up into place because of how heavy it was.It is perfect for my mud room. I'm happy with the quality. It looks nice and the family actually uses it!!! No more coats on the backs of chairs. And everyone can find a coat quickly when needed. I should of done this years ago!!!Disappointing. The quality of the product is just not there. The finish is chipped all along the edges and there looks like there's black marker on it in a couple of spots. Like someone used a black sharpie to cover up some chip marks? It does come with a little marker to touch up the finish which is not black, it's the proper color, so I don't know what the black markings are.It fastens to the wall via a backboard drilled through studs and then you take the shelf which also has a notch and slip that notch into the notch on the back board. Since it's made of particle that doesn't seem like it's going to be very sturdy for a long period of time. Meh. Go for solid wood. My bad.Update - Company approved my request for refund but with the condition that I pay for the shipping to return it. When I went to mail it today, I discovered it would cost almost as much to ship it back as I paid for it. Decided to just cut my losses. The shelf now lives boxed up in a dark corner of my garage.Bought this because it was a matcing piece with the bench and two tall shoe racks that we purchased. Pretty easy to put together. Just be very careful when you are attaching the two dividers for the cubby's that you have the screw hole ( that is on each of them) in the correct position. If you don't, the unit will still go together pefectly, but when you go to attach the back piece the screw holes will not line up and you will have to take it apart to reposition them like I did. Grrrrrr. Other than that I had no issues with the assembly. Husband will mount it tomorrow and I'm sure it will look great:)I bought the matching foot stool/cubby for this so with both of them on my entry-way, it adds a classy look to my home. The product was easy to assemble, did it in about 15 minutes even though there was lots of parts. Came with some extra pegs and screws which is nice(in case you accidentally drop one and lose it to a heating grate or hungry cat)Mounting it is a 2 person job though, as it's not exactly light, but really not that heavy. My one comment is that the mounting screws that were supplied are very frail... I power drill ate through the screw hole like it was butter so I had to use 2.5" wood screws instead. I won't take any points away from the product due to the cheap mounting screws though, I recommend this nonetheless. We bought it together with the bench. I love the design of it. We have a very small entrance room, but the shelf fitted very well and there is no problem to open the door, because the's not very wide. So, this shelf will be good for those who has a small entrance hall. It's very very specious: we use the upper part for hats, bike helmets, and the lover part to hand jackets and my purses. It was very easy to adjust, the instructions were very easy to read. The best part of it - is the color. It is not easy to find a furniture of this type of color rather then white, black, or brown. It said grey in the description, but the real color is a mix of grey and beige, and it looks rich, the same as on the picture. The reason why I don't give it 5 stars- it's a quality. Its not a wood. The shelf made of wood chips and it is very easy to damage it or chip the piece ( that what happened with our bench that we bought together). So you have to be very carefull not to hang or put stuff with sharp metal things, or to hit with something, if you want it to have a presentable look for more then 3 years. But nothing is labelled, and all the hardware came in one big bag. A little annoying but not a deal breaker. It wasn't hard to assemble but one piece the corner was damaged. It went into a spot where no one will see so I'm not going to bother with returns or getting another piece. You'll need a drill, a level and a stud finder to mount it on the wall, and most likely a second person.
